The Fallas de Valencia festival is celebrated every year on and around the 19th March, this city´s bg day. The festival welcomes in the spring with humour and satire. Religious organisations build huge models in wax, representing well known national and international figures from the world of politics, sport, show business, etc. and at the end of the festival all but one of the models is set alight and consumed by the flames.
During the Fallas de valencia, the smell of gun powder from fireworks imbues every corner of the city.
Aside from the Fallas, as occurs in the rest of the country, the Christmas holidays are highly celebrated in Valencia, with Christmas day and New Year´s eve the most important days. January 6th is a special day for children, as this is the day that the Three Wise Kings arrive from the east bearing gifts.
The Cruces de Mayo festival in May, the night of San Juan (23rd to 24th of June), Corpus Christi (19th June), and Easter week are also important dates in valencia´s calendar, as is the Carnival which changes date each year according to when Easter falls. Easter of course is a festival with a long tradition of celebration in Spain, above all in Andalusia.
Another date to mark in the calender is the Valencia Autonomous Community Day, celebrated on the anniversary of the reconquest of the city of Valencia by Jaume I the Conquistador. On this date each year there is a civic parade, presided over by the "Real Senyera", the flag of the Valencian Community. |
